Teens
These are the classes we have available for dancers (ages 12+) for our 2018-19 season.
Acro is a combination of dance and gymnastics. At this level is an intro to basic gymnastics skills and elements (i.e. forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, as well as gymnastics games set to music). Dancers will also work on flexibility and strength! As always, the class will progress to more challenging skills based on each student’s ability! Ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance. In ballet, the focus is on posture, gracefulness, body placement, footwork, turns, jumps, and leaps. We work on exercises at the barre, stretching, adagio, petite allegro, grande allegro and choreography in class. At Allegro, we enjoy exploring both classical and contemporary ballet techniques. Jazz teaches current dance trends set to popular music and classic jazz styles. Today, there are many faces of jazz and students grow to appreciate the traditional and the funky styles of today. Musical Theatre allows dancers to become characters through their dancing – we use musicals from both broadway and movies to inspire our classes. For example, students learn about Chicago, Fosse, Wicked, Hairspray, West Side Story, Annie, High School Musical, Cinderella, the Sound of Music and many many more! Sometimes we even take a song we love and create our own characters and storyline! Lyrical dance is a wonderful way for dancers to learn to truly express themselves as artists. We tell stories of love, sadness, friendship and hope through this genre. Lyrical is a combination of the techniques learned in ballet, jazz and modern. Choreography encompasses the use of balance, flexibility and control utilizing the lyrics and feeling of the music. In level 6 & 7, we also work on Contemporary Dance techniques too – which a real combination of all genres of dance and allows the choreographer (and subsequently his/her students’) to create truly unique ways of moving. Tap encourages students learn the syncopated rhythms and styles of tap dancing – past and present. Tap dancing has made a BIG comeback in recent years. We are inspired by tap artists such as Savion Glover, the Rockettes, and the Tap Dogs! Hip-Hop is most likely the most popular dance genre today, hip-hop is another dance form that grew out of jazz. It began with break dancing, turned into funk, and now we learn about pop-n-lockin’ and dubstep. Hip-Hop class is a great way to create your unique style and let loose and have a ton of fun! Admission into the Pointe program is at the discretion of the instructor and director. A student’s ballet training and physical capability must be considered for pointe to be a successful and fun experience. A physician’s evaluation is also required. Pointe students are required to take two ballet classes a week. Int/Advanced Pointe** (ages 14+) **Placement in these classes is based on teacher/director approval Acro
